Check out/ watch Miss Representation
"Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s first film Miss Representation premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film and exposed the ways in which mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence.
In response to overwhelming public demand for ongoing education and social action in support of the film’s message, Newsom founded the organization that has become The Representation Project in April 2011. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, The Representation Project inspires individuals and communities to challenge and overcome limiting stereotypes.
While traveling the world with Miss Representation, Newsom encountered many parents and educators who thanked her for making Miss Representation, but asked, “What about our boys? Isn’t there a boy crises going on? And, how can we help our boys and men be a part of the gender equality solution?” In response, she began research and production on her second film The Mask You Live In, which premiered at Sundance in 2015.
The Mask You Live In explores how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming our boys, men, and society at large, while urging viewers to take action. With the release of this second film (and more to come), The Representation Project steps into a bolder agenda. One that requires all of us working together to ensure equality and justice.
As an organization, The Representation Project remains true to the message of Miss Representation that limiting stereotypes harm all of us and that women deserve a seat at the table. We take that commitment forward with us, as we tackle the biases that impact our larger society."

The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women by Naomi Wolf
Although this is focused on women, it's for BOTH /ALL genders as well. Men have to suffer this as well being objectified by women, etc. NO ONE should be objectified. Porn stars can be objectified, but they can also not be objectified since they are choosing to work in the adult industry using their own minds.
"In today's world, women have more power, legal recognition, and professional success than ever before. Alongside the evident progress of the women's movement, however, writer and journalist Naomi Wolf is troubled by a different kind of social control, which, she argues, may prove just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty.""

9 Ways We Can Improve Body Image for Men Too by Lexi Herrick from Huffington Post

1. Don't make negative comments about a man's appearance and assume he doesn't care.
2. Stop talking about genital size.
3. Forget the idea that certain men are just "too skinny."
4. Stop assuming all men who are overweight are so by choice or sheer negligence.
and they shouldn't NEED to lose weight
5. Don't ignore the comments men make about the way they view themselves.
6. Realize that fawning over "perfect" looking people can also have a grave effect.
7. Recognize this reality as a man interacting with other men.
8. Understand that businesses target the insecurities of men to make money, just as they do women.
9. Reinforce positive male body image as women, just as men should for women.

Maybelline Introduces Line Of Injectable Makeup To Enhance Appearance Of Internal Organs from The Onion
Satire.

"NEW YORK—Saying that women no longer need to settle for plain, drab internal tissue, the cosmetics brand Maybelline introduced a new line of injectable makeup this week to enhance the appearance of wearers’ organs. “With our new injectable makeup options, women can finally have the type of flawless, gorgeous-looking digestive and cardiopulmonary systems they’ve always wanted,” said Maybelline spokesperson Diane Moss, adding that women will soon be able to use a 10cc Maybelline syringe to apply their new set of cosmetics, which currently include a “bold and flirty” line of lung shadow; blood vessel mascara for thicker, longer capillaries; and spleen foundation to cover unsightly blemishes and provide a smooth, even look to the lymphoid organ. “Our selection of over 300 shades of heartstick ensures that women will be able to find the perfect color and level of shimmer to enhance their atria and ventricles for nearly any occasion. And the youthful definition that comes from a quick thoracic injection of pancreas rouge is certain to provide women a boost of confidence before they step out the door each morning.” Moss added that Maybelline would also cater to those women looking for a more natural look by introducing an injectible line of products designed to conceal the fact that they’re even wearing organ makeup at all."

"When I was a kid...'oh she's so cute,' my mother would say,'she's also really smart'....." - Kerry Washington/ Beauty Redefined's post about telling little girls they are smart and pretty
Posted entire article on this post because facebook may delete it
"Little girls and teens who are primarily valued for how cute and pretty they are grow up to be women who struggle with their body image because they learn to evaluate themselves based on others' validation regarding their looks. That's why some of the women you think are the most ideal-looking are often the ones who feel the worst about their bodies. It's a losing game because our "ideals" are perpetually out of reach and our self-perceptions are usually distorted. Looks-based validation isn't always dependable no matter how stunning you are since our appearances change with age, babies, relationships, health and just LIVING. We have got to learn to value others and ourselves for so much more than our beauty. Yes, teach little girls to see beauty in themselves and others, but teach them that their beauty is not their currency. Their value and their power can't depend on their ever-changing outsides and our culture's ever-changing ideals! How about their talents, character, personality traits, etc.? We love how actress Kerry Washington's mom would switch the focus to Kerry's intelligence. It's harder than going straight for the surface stuff, but well worth it. Try it! "

9 Reasons to Ignore Every Mascara Ad Ever and Embrace Your Own Eyelashes - BEAUTY REDEFINED
Note: If you like playing around with makeup that is one thing. This is for people who think they need to have better eyelashes because of the beauty industry telling us we need to in order to be loved.

1. Natural extension-free, insert-free eyelashes on women are unbelievably rare in all media today,
2. Like the sticky note says, [ads] has been altered to sell many unreal ideals...
3. Why is “LOOK-AT-ME” always the goal if you’re female?
4. No one ever ever ever talks about men’s eyelashes or sells men anything to do with their eyelashes or asks men to think about what their eyelashes are lacking.
5. We are not throwing shade on anyone with lash extensions, expensive potions, mascaras, procedures or prescriptions.
6. Own your reality.
7. Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline. OR MAYBE it’s Maybelline plus lash inserts, plus Photoshop, plus an objectifying culture that teaches us our appearances define our worth that gives this ad its power.
[side note from me: I love mascara, remember this is for women who think they NEED it in order to be pretty] 8. I’m rebelling against this endless eyelash pressure by boycotting mascara today.
9. If people ask you if you’re “sick” or “tired” or “OK?” when you’re not wearing makeup,

"The presure to be perfect is purely for profit"- Beauty Redefined
It talks about women, but men have these problems as well.
"The beauty industry is worth more than $100 billion and that doesn't change even when the economy tanks. The diet and weight loss industries make about $70 billion each year while almost no one is successful at losing weight and keeping it off using their programs. Plastic surgery (mostly lipo and breast enhancements) is up nearly 500% in the last decade, with 92% of the procedures performed on girls and women. New "solutions" to new "flaws" are created for women (rarely ever for men) by advertisers every single day, from "unsightly underarms" (thanks, Dove!) to "insufficient lashes" (thanks Latisse!) and every single inch of our bodies -- from the roots of our dry/oily/mousy/limp/wrong-colored hair to our rough/dry/unsightly feet and pedicure-needing toenails. Female pores, female wrinkles, female scars, female hair and female skin in general have been sold back to us as problems in need of fixing by companies claiming to sell the solutions -- *but* these things haven't always been viewed as problems *and* they do not always need "fixing." When it comes to viewing regular human characteristics as "flaws," we're #notbuyingit. The next time you notice a physical insecurity, think about who profits from you feeling that way and who may have invented the idea that whatever you're feeling insecure about is a problem, rather than simply a normal aspect of a human body. This critical awareness of the $$ behind our anxieties is incredibly empowering. Only then can we take our power back."

FDA/Medical/pharmaceutical vs beauty/hollywood/diet/plastic surgery industry (updated march 2015)
"Yesterday's drugs were about need; today's are about desire."
Keep loving yourself because they are getting desperate.
We are told to hate out body so big pharma can prescribe us medicine and the beauty industry can sell us products.Keep loving yourself because they are getting desperate.
The FDA medical/pharmaceutical companies know that people are waking up because they are SO desperate to prescribe meds to people that they are looking at hollywood/the beauty/plastic surgery industry for ideas to list what a person should look like as "medical reasons". If you don't look like Barbie you have something wrong with you and they NEED to fix it, because you may die.
Next thing you know if you don't have blonde hair, big lips, are not tan or if you have a "big nose" you may die as it's so "unhealthy"
They already have taken weight loss and the need to be thin, and botox from the beauty industry. Let's see what they can come up with next.
People are actually starting to like themselves, lets scare them with "medical research says." "What's the latest Hollywood trend?"
I remember learning about science in school not ONCE did they mention any experiments that shamed our body. I mean, I didn't understand half of it, but I don't remember learning about how I am a POS as a women because "biology says that you must have huge tits for a man to love you." Now it seems "scientists" just do "experiments" that contribute to body shaming instead of learning about planets, the earth, space, the weather, etc.they try to tell us if our body is "good enough" for a mate even though it REALLY doesn't matter and THAT has been proven.
Does it really matter what the "average" tit or dick size is or what comes out when i "squirt"
thanks for "scientifically and medically" proving I am worthless because my body doesn't look a certain way. Can we please leave that to hollywood and fake dating "experts" trying to sell us something.
But thanks "science" for going from bill nye the science guy to Cosmo.

See How Much the "Perfect" Female Body Has Changed in 100 Years (It's Crazy!):
You will see how diet pills were not prescribed until Twiggy and a few decades later, Kate Moss, came onto the scene. Then, being "fat" was bad and "unhealthy"
Because this little girl is considered "overweight"
Lipedema
It seems that this is just to shame bodies. If you don't have a thigh gap you have a disease, at least that is what it seems like.
Fat Disorders (dot) org = If you do not have the perfect neck, the perfect chin, the perfect thin body then you have a "fat disorder"

I love the term"fantasy drug" and I love the term "barbie drugs!"
Diet pills - because people need to be thin to be beautiful, right? The FDA just lists the need to be thin as a medical reason.
Lets look at some other drugs that the FDA and pharmaceutical companies look to the beauty industry for.
Botox - because it is now being pushed as a medicine. Getting older gracefully is bad, right?
@CNN
Eyes/Eyelashes
Latisse - Prescribed f you want longer eyelashes. Prescription drug.Because big fat eyelashes = beauty and now, the pharmaceutical companies are trying to cash in on it.
Laser procedure can turn brown eyes blue
Although numerous side effects are related to these drugs, they are pushed onto people. The fact a doctor would prescribe a drug that isn't needed just so someone can have "better looking eyelashes" is a huge concern.

Nose (crooked nose) -
Unless it's broken,of course who cares if it has a bump in it or if it isn't perfect. See How Much the "Perfect" Female Body Has Changed in 100 Years (It's Crazy!)
"There's a reason magazine covers include lines like "5 Moves for Michelle Obama Arms" or "The Secret for a Booty Like Beyoncé." But if you’ve ever found yourself wishing for this actress’s waist or that singer’s legs, remember this: The media’s concept of the ideal woman’s body isn’t static. Whoever People magazine deems “most beautiful” this year is just a representation of what has bubbled up in the cauldron of pop culture. That silhouette of the “ideal woman” has been put through a series of fun house mirrors (fashion, movies, pop music, politics). It also changes year over year, so the physical qualities we embrace today are often at odds with those from previous generations.
To prove our point, we’re taking a closer look at body ideals over the last 100 years—which shows that, as they say on Project Runway, “In fashion, one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.”

"Welcome to the era of the hourglass. In the 1950s, the ideal body type reaches Jessica Rabbit proportions. After the angularity of the war era, a soft voluptuousness was prized above all else. Ads of the time even advised “skinny” women to take weight-gain supplements like Wate-On to fill out their curves. Playboy magazine and Barbie were both created in this decade, echoing a tiny-waisted, large-chested ideal. Fashions also showcased this body type with the rounded shapes of sweetheart necklines and circle skirts."

"The swinging 60s brings the pendulum back in the other direction. Thin is in. And Jessica-Rabbit proportions are out. The look is now fresh-faced, girlish, and androgynously trim. Models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton (aka “The Shrimp”) represented a new ideal: doll-faced, super slender, and petite. The clothing supports this look: shrunken shift dresses remove the cinched waistline, and fashion demands of a smaller bust and slim hips. (Sound familiar? It’s the same dramatic swing we saw from Gibson girl to flapper.)
More and more women are going girdle-free and embracing a less constricting wardrobe. The trade-off? Now that slim, flat-stomached look must be achieved through diet. Right on cue: Enter Weight Watchers, founded in 1963."

"Honey, we shrunk the supermodel. Kate Moss ushers in the era of the waif. Naysayers also dub it “heroin chic” for the gaunt look associated with Seattle’s grunge music scene. At 5’7” Moss is undeniably petite for a model and thin, even by industry standards. It’s a firmly unathletic look and a reaction to the Amazonian, uber-fit woman of the 80s.
Slouchy jeans, oversized fraying sweaters, and even unisex fragrances (CK One, we’re calling you out) all support the petite and androgynous waif look. Hollywood also embraces the look. A-list 90s actress Winona Rider is so petite, costar Ben Stiller exclaims, "She's like a little figurine for the coffee table!"
