Which twin is the smoker?

The twin on the right is a smoker. The twin on the left is a non-smoker.

"The study looked at other aging factors — alcohol consumption, stress and sunscreen use, for instance — and found they were similar in these sets of twins.  It didn’t address changes in the twins’ living environment or diet.
“Smoking reduces the collagen formation, results in collagen degradation and reduces the skin circulation,” one doctor said.
“Additionally, nicotine reduces the skin thickness. All of these reduce skin elasticity and (cause) premature aging.”  The study was published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery."

Walking

"
  1. It deflects diabetes. New research links brisk walking to a significant risk reduction for developing type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is a predictor of this disease, even in people with normal glucose levels. But a recent British study found that people with a family history of the disease who walked briskly, or performed some other type of moderate to vigorous activity on a routine basis, improved insulin sensitivity.
  2. It soups up your sex life. Sex and exercise go hand-in-hand. In a study of women between 45 and 55 years old, those who exercised, including brisk walking, reported not only greater sexual desire, but better sexual satisfaction, too.
  3. It saves you on gym costs. In this economy, people are cutting excesses, and that includes trips to the health club. In an American Heart Association survey, a quarter of the 1,000 people questioned had axed their gym memberships sometime in the previous six months. But no matter where you live, there’s a place you can pound the pavement or trek a trail, and 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking a week can help manage stress and prevent heart disease. Moderate walking equals an average of about 100 steps per minute. San Diego State University researchers suggest using a pedometer and aiming for 1,000 steps in 10 minutes, and working up to 3,000 steps in 30 minutes.
  4. It can get you off meds. Using data from the National Walkers’ Health Study, including more than 32,000 women and 8,000 men, researchers found that those who took the longest weekly walks, not necessarily accumulated the most mileage per week, were more likely to use less medication. This shouldn’t deter you from taking shorter walks more frequently throughout the week, but you should consider squeezing in a longer walk once a week, perhaps on the weekend when you have more spare time.
  5. It can help fade fibromyalgia pain. This chronic condition affects more than 4 percent of the population, and often involves pain, fatigue and brain fog. A small study found that in women 32 to 70 years old, those who walked 60 minutes, performed light exercises, and stretched three times a week for 18 weeks reported significant improvements in walking and mental capacity, and were less tired and depressed.
  6. It helps you beat breast cancer. Women who walk regularly after being diagnosed with breast cancer have a 45 percent greater chance of survival than those who are inactive, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Yale researchers heading up the study also found that those who exercised in the year before being diagnosed were 30 percent more likely to survive, compared to women who didn’t exercise leading up to their diagnosis.
  7. Strolling reduces stroke risk. Walking briskly for just 30 minutes, five days a week can significantly lower your risk of suffering a stroke, according to University of South Carolina researchers. After studying 46,000 men and 15,000 women over the course of 18 years, those with increased fitness levels associated with regular brisk walking had a 40 percent lower risk of suffering a stoke than those with the lowest fitness level.
  8. It can save your mind. Italian researchers enlisted 749 people suffering from memory problems in a study and measured their walking and other moderate activities, such as yard work. At the four-year follow-up, they found that those who expended the most energy walking had a 27 percent lower risk of developing dementia than the people who expended the least. This could be the result of physical activity’s role in increasing blood flow to the brain."

Beat Aunt Flo

Eucalyptus - " Eucalyptus oil is a natural vasodilator - in other words, it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Thus, it provides natural pain relief for menstrual cramps in the same way that the above mentioned anti-inflammatory drugs work. Treatment is fast and simple.

Feverfew - "It may be more effective than other nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (NSAIDS), like aspirin. It is the combination of ingredients in the feverfew plant that brings such effective relief. It works to inhibit the release of two inflammatory substances, serotonin and prostaglandins, both believed to contribute to the onset of migraines. By inhibiting these amines as well as the production of the chemical histamine, the herb controls inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head and prevents blood vessel spasms which may contribute to headaches."

Viburnum prunifolium - "is reported to contain several active constituents that are uterine relaxants, one of which is scopoletin. Black Haw has been historically used as a specific medicine for menstrual cramps with severe low back pain and bearing-down pelvic pains. For menstrual pains associated with a profuse menstrual flow and intermittent severe pains, Black Haw would probably be a more specific choice than Cramp Bark.
Dose: Cramp Bark Tincture: 1/2 tsp every 2-3 hours.
Dose: Black Haw Tincture: 1/4 tsp every 2-4 hours.
Caution: Both species should be avoided during pregnancy except in the hands of an experienced herbal practitioner.

Scutellaria spp.
Cimicifuga racemosa

Cramp bark - "Cramp bark is considered the most potent uterine antispasmodic of the various Viburnum species because it contains more of the antispasmodic constituent scopoletin.
Cramp bark also contains more antispasmodic volatile oils than other species. Cramp bark usually works rapidly for simple menstrual cramps. If it fails to relieve symptoms, the discomfort is probably not due to uterine muscle spasm but to inflammation or irritation of the uterus or ovaries, endometrial infection, or cysts. Cramp bark's close relative, black haw, also is useful for uterine cramps, congestion, and irritation in the uterus and ovaries with radiating pains, and may be better indicated for those types of complaints."

Squaw vine,
Unicorn root,
Bromelain,
Evening primrose oil

Blue cohosh - "Black Cohosh has gained increased attention in the last few years largely as an herb for the relief of menopause symptoms. However, when I was first studying botanical medicine, this herb was known more for its relaxant affect on the uterus in dysmenorrhea, false labor pains, and in threatened miscarriage. It can be helpful in both congestive and spasmodic menstrual cramps of even a severe nature. If PMS irritability and anxiety, delayed or irregular menstrual cycles, or scanty flow, are associated with the menses, then Black Cohosh would particlularly be indicated for the menstrual cramps."
Dose: Tincture: 1/4 tsp – 1/2 tsp every 2-4 hours.
Caution: Avoid during pregnancy except in the hands of a trained herbal practitioner.

Grocery store CEOs: Refuse Monsanto's GMO sweet corn!

Monsanto's GMO Corn Linked To Organ Failure, Study Reveals
Sign petition to keep it out of stores., or at least label what it is.
This is the first time Monsanto has engineered a vegetable that could be served straight to your dinner table. It's health impacts on humans are largely unknown — but if this unlabeled, and potentially dangerous products succeeds, Monsanto is sure to bring us even more.

A study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences found that Monsanto's GMO corn led to organ failure in mammals. This GMO corn has also recently been linked to a new pathogen causing crop failure and a sharp spike in livestock infertility - as high as 20%. But despite the warnings of one of the nation's leading plant pathologists that more study was needed to determine potential health impacts on humans, the USDA rapidly approved this corn for us to eat.
Even worse, lobbyists for Monsanto and others in the chemical and agribusiness industry have successfully fought tooth and nail to keep GMO products totally unlabeled. So shockingly, consumers are being denied the right to know if they're purchasing Monsanto's new genetically modified sweet corn."

Dolce & Gabbana: Stop the Killer Jeans

Dolce & Gabbana: Stop the Killer Jeans
"Sandblasting, which gives jeans a 'worn' or used look, is known to kill workers in garments producing countries like Turkey and Bangladesh where jeans sandblasting is done manually. The process involves workers firing sand under high pressure at jeans. Dust then enters the environment, exposing workers to silica, which causes silicosis in the lungs. Eventually, workers die because they cannot breathe properly anymore. There is no known cure. Some major brands, such as Levi's, H&M, C&A and Gucci, have already abolished sandblasted jeans in their collections. But in the 'global center of fashion', Italian luxury brands like Dolce & Gabbana have yet to publicly ban sandblasting from their supply chains! Thousands of lives are at risk... Join us in calling on Dolce & Gabbana to ban sandblasting."

They can find other ways to make the used look. This is 2011 not 1811.
