Mother's milk when sick & Baby Originally posted by Mallory Smothers

"So yall.. This is just cuckoo awesome-- I read an article from a medical journal not too long ago about how Mom's milk changes to tailor baby's needs in more ways than just caloric intake.. So this doctor discusses that when a baby nurses, it creates a vacuum in which the infant's saliva sneaks into the mother's nipple. There, it is believed that mammary gland receptors interpret the "baby spit backwash" for bacteria and viruses and, if they detect something amiss (i.e., the baby is sick or fighting off an infection), Mom's body will actually change the milk's immunological composition, tailoring it to the baby's particular pathogens by producing customized antibodies. (Science backs this up. A 2013 Clinical and Translational Immunology study found that when a baby is ill, the numbers of leukocytes in its mother's breast milk spike.) So I filed that away in the back of my mind until I was packing frozen milk into the big deep freeze today.

Unclassified Woman By Michelle Marie McGrath - Podcast

"Unclassified Woman is for women who don’t have, or don’t intend to have children, but do intend to create a meaningful life they love. Part myth busting, part inspirational story sharing, the podcast features fulfilled women, sharing their experiences and insights, while questioning the expectations of women everywhere. I have a dream that one day, women who don’t have children – for whatever reason – no longer endure the unfair judgments placed upon them. My hope for these women, is that their worth as women isn’t measured by their ability to birth children, but rather by their ability to birth their true desires and contribute their gifts to the world. When a woman reaches ‘a certain age’ with no children in sight, there usually ensues some intrusive questioning. Are you infertile? Isn’t that selfish? Who’s going to look after you when you’re old? Why don’t you have kids yet? Are you a ‘career’ woman? My intention is that this podcast series is an inspiration for women who are ready to define life on their own terms and focus on their purpose, knowing that biologically giving birth is off their agenda (whatever the reason). This does not mean that children are not a part of their life. They may have step children, god children, beloved nieces and nephews and enjoy the company of their friends’ children. With almost 25% of women over 40 child-free by choice or childless through circumstance, it seems absurd that women still have to justify their decisions or endure pity about why they’re not mothers. The reality is, as a society we still tend to over-celebrate mothers juggling ‘it all’, and under-celebrate women who, whilst not mothers, have created lives of purpose and service. Rather than simply dream about this better world, I’ve decided to do something about it. To get the conversation started, this podcast provides inspiring examples of women around the globe, who are building lives beyond biological mothering. These women have nuggets of wisdom to share with all women. So if you are reading this, and you are fed up of feeling judged,’ I’m here to tell you, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. As women, let’s all support each other. Each woman’s path in life is equally valid and sacred."

"When I was a kid...'oh she's so cute,' my mother would say,'she's also really smart'....." - Kerry Washington/ Beauty Redefined's post about telling little girls they are smart and pretty

Posted entire article on this post because facebook may delete it

"Little girls and teens who are primarily valued for how cute and pretty they are grow up to be women who struggle with their body image because they learn to evaluate themselves based on others' validation regarding their looks. That's why some of the women you think are the most ideal-looking are often the ones who feel the worst about their bodies. It's a losing game because our "ideals" are perpetually out of reach and our self-perceptions are usually distorted. Looks-based validation isn't always dependable no matter how stunning you are since our appearances change with age, babies, relationships, health and just LIVING. We have got to learn to value others and ourselves for so much more than our beauty. Yes, teach little girls to see beauty in themselves and others, but teach them that their beauty is not their currency. Their value and their power can't depend on their ever-changing outsides and our culture's ever-changing ideals! How about their talents, character, personality traits, etc.? We love how actress Kerry Washington's mom would switch the focus to Kerry's intelligence. It's harder than going straight for the surface stuff, but well worth it. Try it! "

This Single Dad Couldn't Do His Daughter's Ponytail, So He Went To Cosmetology School

"Colorado-based dad Greg Wickherst has been shaving his head his whole adult life, so when it came time to put his daughter Izzy's hair into a ponytail, he was clueless. "Hair has definitely not been my thing," Greg told The Huffington Post.

Darling, We Don’t Play With Our Vulvas At The Table - from Scary Mommy

As parents, we lie all the time. About the Easter Bunny or Santa or the Tooth Fairy, about how long ten minutes is, about whether or not we remembered they wanted to have grilled cheese for dinner again, we lie a lot. But one thing I never lie about is sex.

I don’t want them to grow up ashamed of their bodies or confused about what they do. I don’t tell them about cabbage patches or storks, I make an effort, always, to be honest about human reproduction. Every aspect of it.

I’ve had conversations with other moms about having “the talk.” I don’t think my kids and I will have that particular talk, because they already know. And we talk about it often- kids are obsessive creatures. We read Where Did I Come From? and What Makes A Baby which together cover every aspect of the subject. We can talk about IVF and c-sections, because both of those are part of the story of their births, and we can talk about the fact that yes, mommy and daddy still have sex regardless of our plans for conception. And when they’re older, we’ll start talking about contraception.

Because lying to your kids about sex helps nobody. Telling them that sex is “only between mommies and daddies” is a lie that leads to confused, hormone charged teenagers. Telling them that sex is “only something that happens when two people love each other very much” is a lie that causes hormone charged teenagers to confuse “love” with “lust,” or “obsession.” It leads to leaps of logic like, “If I have sex with them, we must be in love.” Or worse- “If I love them, I have to have sex with them.” And how many teenage tragedies are based on that misconception?

The truth is human beings, almost universally, like sex. It feels good. I’s supposed to feel good. If it didn’t, the human race would die out. The truth is sex isn’t special and magical just because it’s sex. The truth is you can have spectacular sex with strangers who’s names you don’t even know. The truth is that just because you can, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

Help Im Pregant (dot) com

"Life can be hard. Sometimes things happen that we don't expect, and sometimes we just make bad choices. We've all been there. If you're struggling for any reason right now, we want to help. We've been there, and we care.

LifeSaver Ministries is a unique crisis pregnancy help-line. You can reach us by calling (800) 648-4357. Our help line is covered by trained, caring counselors.

We offer hope, counseling and information for women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy, women who are considering having an abortion or are suffering from the aftermath of having an abortion. We also provide material assistance to families struggling to raise young children.

We have counselors that blanket New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. If you live in any of these states, we will be able to connect you with a counselor in your area.

Post Abortion Counseling

When a girl needs post-abortive counseling we connect her with a counselor that has taken an advanced post abortion counseling seminar. Many of our counselors are post-abortive and understand the journey post-abortive women must go through in order to heal. With love and support our counselors will walk the journey with her.

About Our Counselors

Our counselors use only clinic quality pregnancy tests, with a 99.9% accuracy rate. All of our counselors are pro-life Christians, and will give the client all the information she needs to make good choices. The counselor will help her work through her emotions and help her to recognize her strengths. Often when a person is facing a crisis it's hard for them to see all their options and all the possibilities. LifeSaver Ministries believes that if we focus on the mother, we'll win the baby by default.

LifeSaver Ministries does not encourage their counselors to use graphic abortion pictures while counseling with a client. We believe that when a girl sees fetal development pictures and understands the abortion procedures, graphic pictures are not necessary for her to make the connection.

All of our counselors rely on the Holy Spirit's leading as they counsel, and look for
open doors to introduce the client to Christ.

TLC Program

Many of our clients are single mothers and are struggling financially. Our TLC Program offers them a hand-up. Each client can receive one TLC box per child. In the box are outfits, blankets, coats, hygiene products, diapers, bottles, and other case specific needs. Also included in each box is a bible, tract, and a letter encouraging the client to turn towards the One who will always be there, through every trial. We offer the boxes as a way to show the love of Christ to a hurting world. Just as Christ addressed the physical needs of others so that their hearts would be open to hear the truth about their spiritual needs, our prayer is that as we help to lift the physical burden in their life, they will open their heart to Christ and allow Him to meet the spiritual need of their life.

Girls from any state can request help from the TLC program. Our boxes are shipped UPS to any US address.

Our Soulutions ministry offers counseling and assistance programs to women and families in need, with opportunity to earn needed household, clothing, and personal care items."

Minnesota Judge has 200 blunt words for divorcing parents

Obviously if someone is abusive then take proper action to ensure the safety of the people involved. This is about spiteful parents trying to "get back" at the person he,or she shares the child with.

Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting

Parenting can be easier!"Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting is every parent’s goal. But when our kids don’t listen to us or do the simple things what we ask them to do, it’s easy to lose patience and to nag, repeat, yell or threaten. There is a better way. This revolutionary program gives you 5 simple and wildly effective techniques that make your kids want to listen to you and to do what you need them to do without having to remind, repeat or yell. When you use these positive and practical parenting strategies, your child’s behavior will improve and family life will become calmer, easier and happier."

Check out the Calmer,Easier,Happier,Parenting official site

Tired of Repeating and Reminding?

"Here are the six very simple steps in this method.

1.    Stop what you’re doing, go to where your child is, and stand and look at him.

2.    Wait until he stops what he’s doing and looks at you.

3.    Say what you want him to do – clearly, simply and only once.

4.    Ask him to repeat the instruction back to you.

5.    Stand and wait.

6.    While you’re standing and waiting: notice every step in the right direction (Descriptive Praise) and acknowledge how your child might be feeling at the moment (Reflective Listening).
top image
Now here’s a fascinating thing. You’ll rarely have to go beyond step three before your child will go and do what they ask. In fact, often you won’t even have to go past step one! Why? Because the first key step is so respectful that children will respond differently. It’s not what they are used to us doing. We tend to skip this first step and shout orders from another room or up the stairs. These steps also show intentionality – that you mean what you say and that you’ll follow through.

Try it and experience the results for yourself. Transitions will become smoother and easier for everyone, and you can say goodbye to repeating and reminding!"

Books on parenting skit from Portlandia

A cute skit from Portlandia that shows how silly parenting books really are. As it states in the description....

"When it comes to parenting, sometimes it's better to trust your instincts over something you read in a book"

Running on Empty at Truth Can Prevail

"The material that follows is simply the most profound and enlightening I have ever posted on this blog. Jonice Webb, Ph.D. has written one of most revealing books I have ever read on the subject of why so many of us suffer emotionally and are at a loss to identify a reason or reasons for our issues. Dr. Webb has made a psychological breakthrough with her stunning and insightful description of what she calls Childhood Emotional Neglect or simply CEN.

With Dr. Webb’s gracious permission, I present the Introduction and Chapter One of her highly praised and award-winning book: Running on Empty: Overcome Your Childhood Emotional Neglect. Also included is her brief questionnaire which quickly gives the reader a useful sense as to whether he/she might be experiencing the symptoms of CEN."
