"Superfood trends come and go. One day we’re obsessively filling our blenders with acai; the next, we’re scouring the farmers market for pichuberries. But besides the hype, which powerhouse foods can best help us ward off sickness and keep our bodies healthy?
William Paterson University did the math for a paper published last week in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal Preventing Chronic Disease. Researcher Jennifer Di Noia studied 47 fruits and veggies associated with reduced chronic disease risk. She focused on 17 nutrients linked to good health and lower risks of cancer and heart disease, including folate, fiber, zinc, and vitamins B6, B12, C, D, and E. Though the study didn’t consider every phytochemical or nutritional compound a food contains, it’s a handy guide to the most potent disease-fighting superfoods.
