"The agribusiness lobby is trying to pass anti-free speech laws that would make it a crime to record anything on a farm. These so-called Ag-Gag bills target undercover investigations that expose the cruel conditions on factory farms. By making it a crime to make unauthorized recordings on farms, the factory farming lobby hopes to put an end to embarrassing revelations of just how wretched conditions can be in their confinements, feedlots, and slaughterhouses.
Besides clearly infringing on the First Amendment rights of investigators seeking to expose the truth, these Ag-Gag laws also infringe on the rights of everyone to a safe and humane food supply. These laws have been defeated in many of the states where they have been proposed, but the big corporations continue to push this legislation around the country. In 2013, animal rescue worker Amy Meyer was charged under Utah's new ag-gag law for filming animal abuse from across the street on public property. The charges were later dropped when it was clear that Meyer had not violated the law by filming from public property.
In 2014, the governor of Idaho signed into law a bill which will fine and jail anyone who secretly films on a commercial farm in Idaho. FarmForward, along with other activist groups is suing the state of Idaho to find their Ag-Gag law unconstitutional in federal court.
