"#1: Your Sofa
Why: It's full of flame retardants and protected with stain- and water-repellents made with a chemical called PFOA.
#2: Your Favorite Body Spray
Why: Those girl-magnet fragrances are all synthetic, and synthetic fragrances are chemical soups that contain up to 200 different chemicals. Among them: phthalates, which are used to keep the fragrance from dissipating too quickly.
#3. Take-Out
Why: The plastic containers your food comes in aren't just wasteful; they're also exposing you to the same phthalates you just eliminated from your body spray. They also may contain another hormone-mimicking chemical called bisphenol A (BPA). These chemicals migrate out of plastic when it's exposed to hot food.
#4: Canned Food
Why: The epoxy linings of canned goods are made from BPA, and even cans marked "BPA free" use chemicals that are similar in structure to BPA.
#5: Nonorganic Food
Why: It's covered in harmful synthetic pesticides! Those are banned in organic farming.
#6: Cigarettes
Why: Shocking as it is that cigarettes are bad for you, one unexpected reason why is that tobacco leaves have high levels of the heavy metal cadmium, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who smoke have twice as much cadmium in their bodies as nonsmokers.
#7: Burgers
Why: Fatty animal products are a significant source of exposure to persistent industrial chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These chemicals take decades to break down in the environment, which is why they're still being detected despite being banned in the 1970s.
#8: Sushi
Why: Many of the most popular seafood varieties for sushi--including eel, tuna, and salmon--have high levels of PCBs as well as the heavy metal mercury.
#9: Rice
Why: Another reason sushi might not be so good for you--rice and rice products contain inorganic arsenic. The levels vary by product and where the rice was grown, but the Food and Drug Administration doesn't test for the toxic element regularly, so it's hard to know how much you're eating.
#10: Credit-Card Receipts
Why: You might just jam these into your wallet or pocket, but receipts are coated with BPA--that same material in plastic containers and canned foods--to help ink transfer.
#11: Unfiltered tap water
Why: Your tap, or the pipes leading to it, could be polluting your drinking water with lead and arsenic.
#12: Your Cellphone
Why: Cellphone radiation, simple as that."
