Can You Lose Weight With Kelp?

"Kelp is more commonly known as seaweed and is widely used in many different forms medicinally, thanks to it's high content of important nutrients. In many cultures, kelp is eaten daily in dishes that are rich in seafood and in it's concentrated form, kelp is used to improve immunity and lower blood pressure. Kelp can also help you lose weight. This is particularly true if you suffer from a sluggish thyroid, but kelp provides nutritional benefits for anyone who takes it.

Step 1
Add a teaspoon of powdered kelp to soups, salads, vegetable dishes or even baked goods. Powdered kelp has a mild flavor that doesn't overpower your food while still providing essential nutrients like B vitamins, iron and calcium. Most importantly, kelp contains naturally occurring iodine that can increase your metabolism and help you lose weight. Kelp powder can be purchased from your local health food store.

Step 2
Take 200 to 600 milligrams of kelp in pill form every day. Kelp, according to Herbal Extracts Plus, help put your body back in balance. In addition, kelp helps improve your digestive process and can help draw toxins out of your body. Improved digestion helps your body burn fat more efficiently. Divide your kelp supplements into three equal amounts and take with a full glass of water before meals.

Step 3
Eat foods that contain seaweed. These are generally found in Asian dishes such as sushi and miso soup. Steer clear of high fat, fried dishes and instead order steamed, baked or raw dishes that contain seaweed. You can also purchase dried seaweed at a local Asian grocery or health foods store. Crumble the seaweed into the foods you cook at home including salads and soups. You'll be eating healthier, lower fat foods and getting the additional benefits of losing weight thanks to the fiber and iodine content.

Step 4
Use liquid kelp extract in soups, salads or stews, in the same recommended amount as the pill form. You can even put kelp extract in a smoothie drink for added nutrition without changing the flavor of the drink. Liquid kelp is a more versatile version of the pill form of kelp and can be added to baked goods, teas and rice dishes.

Warnings
Check with your physician before making changes to your diet.
Individuals with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before adding supplemental kelp.
Never take more than the recommended dosage of a kelp supplement. While kelp is a generally mild supplement, it has anticoagulant properties that can cause health problems if taken in large doses."
