""More than ten thousand people are dead after Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines on Friday. Gushing floodwater swept children away from their parents. Strong winds flattened homes to rubble. One man told reporters that going outside means "walking on debris and dead people two to three meters high."
Haiyan was one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded – and it was fueled by climate change. But while the world mourns and the death toll rises, our world leaders continue to pour billions into the industries that are fueling climate change disasters. We need to stop giving handouts to the world's top polluters.
Diplomats are at the UN Climate Change conference right now, watching the impact of the typhoon on the Philippines. They’re supposed to be laying the groundwork for international interventions to stop climate change, but they still haven't made any meaningful commitments. The conference envoy from the Philippines has even started a hunger strike in protest of the lack of action.
According to the International Energy Agency, governments subsidized fossil fuels to the tune of $563 billion in 2011. A worldwide ban on dirty energy subsidies would free up taxpayer money to create clean energy infrastructure, develop comprehensive climate preparedness programs, and provide emergency relief when disasters strike.
Please ask the United Nations to take meaningful action at the UN Climate Conference and commit to ending dirty energy subsidies."
